Alexandria is about 220 km from Cairo, it is the second largest city and the main port of Egypt, and the most famous holiday resort of the Egyptians. Alexandria was built by the Greek architect Dinocrates (332-331 BC) on the site of an old village, Rhakotis, at the orders of Alexander the Great. The city, immortalizing Alexander’s name, quickly flourished into a prominent cultural, intellectual, political, and economic metropolis, the remains of which are still evident to this day.
Alexandria lies north- west of the Nile delta and stretches along a narrow land strip between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mariut. It is linked to Cairo by tow major highways and a railroad line.


Nothing remains of the lighthouse on the Pharos Island (3rd cent BC). Which were one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the site of the royal palace lies under the older east harbor.
The Great library of Alexandria finally opens its door, hoping to restate Alexandria as the cultural capital of the Mediterranean.
Once we reach Alexandria, we will find the Greco-Roman museum, which houses many collections of rare Greek and Roman relics and coins amounting in all to about 40 thousand pieces.

Also we find the Pompeii s Pillar, which is mistakenly named, it is over 25 meters high and was built in the honor of Emperor Diocletain.
We also find the Roman Amphitheater, located at Kom El-Dekka, then to the Catacomb, located at Kom El-Shoqafa. It is a tomb dated back to the beginning of the 2nd Century AD, It is a mixture of Roman and Pharaonic art.
Also, there is Islamic antiquities in Alexandria, so we find the Fortress of Qaitbay. It was built on the site of the Ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria; the fort houses the Naval Museum.

Within a very short distance from the Fort we can reach the Andalusian-style El-Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque.
