Legend of Memnon |
The name Memnon derives from Greek legend, a story of a handsome Ethiopian youth who fought for the Trojans in the Trojan War. He was killed by Archilles, but at his mother’s plea was made immortal by Zeus. Memnon was venerated in Egypt, where huge statues of Amenhotep the 3rd at Thebes were called the Colossi of Memnon. Once when broken emitted musical notes at Sunrise (probably the result of sudden heat on chilled stone), said to be Memnon’s greeting to his mother.
